  • This semester began by inducting 21 pledges and ended with 19 along with 2 returning neophytes being initiated.
  • The faculty reception was well attended, having 16 faculty members and many brothers being present.
  • The national office commended the chapter for its work on voter registration and service to the country, after an article in The Observer appeared telling of the work the brothers were doing.
  • Other service events included the Juvenile Diabetes walk, raising over $250; the basketball tournament raising over $200 for Army Emergency Relief Fund; and Ugly Professor which raised $145 for the Cleveland Food Bank, picked by this year's winner, Dr. Drushel.
  • 18 brothers went shopping at Crocker Park, followed by dinner and a movie. Other fellowship events included apple picking, ice skating, Indians game, and a Halloween party.
  • Our beloved mascot, Annod, was stolen by some brothers at Kent. But with the promise of having a kickball game after the holidays, she was kindly returned.
  • 2 brothers and 2 alumni are currently involved in the planning of the National Convention in Louisville, KY, with many other brothers registered to attend.
  • Virginia (Ginny) Wright was awarded the Chapter's 11th DSK.

  • This semester began by inducting 19 pledges and ended with 16 completing the pledge program.
  • Marla Wolf was named as an honorary brother and Yoram Daon was initiated as an advisor.
  • We had our first extremely successful off-campus formal at the Shaker Lakes Nature Center. The theme was "International Luau throughout the Decades." Over 50 brothers, alumni, advisors and non-brothers attended. Other highlights from the fellowship program included bowling (as a rush event with approximately 19 rushees!), snow-tubing, Game Night, the Not-a-Date-Date Party, as well as many impromptu events like Barons hockey games and skiing.
  • The big service event of the semester was the March for Marfan held in memory of Steve Jerkins. Partnering with Case EMS and reaching out into the broader Cleveland community, over $1500 was raised for the National Marfan Foundation. Other service projects included serving dinners with the Hunger Network, cleaning at Malachi house, Science Olympiad, Tackle the Tower, tutoring at Church of the Covenant, weeding at the Nature Center and bingo at Judson Park.
  • The Alumni Event, entitled "A Year in a Day" was successfully held with the attendance of many brothers, alumni, and advisors.
  • 16 brothers, 1 alumnus, 3 pledges, and 1 advisor attended the 56/59 Sectionals Conference held by the University of Cincinnati. The conference was held at a YMCA camp and brothers participated in outdoor activities as well as informational sessions. Theta Upsilon was honored with the Best Fellowship Program award as well as the Chapter of Excellence award.
  • Theta Upsilon Alumnus Jeff Cicerchi was reelected for the Section 59 Chair.
 
Fall 2005

  • The semester began by inducting 17 pledges, with 14 initiating to become full brothers.
  • Our families were rearranged to even out the sizes of our branches and make it easier for us to run Brother Eat Brother and other fun events. The Pham divided to form The Boehms, with all members descended from Josh Boehm, and the New Pham (NP) consisting of everyone else. The West Virginians joined the New Pham, and the active members of the Family of Style were adopted into The Boehms. S & M and the Clan decided to remain unchanged.
  • Gian Chung recieved the DSK award.
  • The chapter sent 14 actives, 1 alumnus, 1 advisor and 1 pledge to the Region V conference in Huntington, West Virginia. Determined that Annod would not be stolen, our pledge tied the mascot to herself for the duration of the weekend. Annod remained safe, and even managed to acquire a pair of ear/horn warmers to stay warm in the cold.
  • Coffee night was added as a weekly fellowship event, with brothers meeting at a different time/place each week to relax and bond. Other fellowship projects included a Halloween party and apple picking.
  • The Faculty Reception was held in Thwing's 1914 room, with seven faculty members attending, and one chose to be initiated an advisor.
  • Service to the country was performed when we held a Volleyball Tournament to raise money for the victims of the hurricanes that ravaged the coast this fall. Other service projects included "gardening" at the nature center, a beach clean-up, tutoring, the Cleveland Food Bank, Ugly Professor, the Pioneer Festival, and lightbulb changing. We completed 1725 service hours.

  • This semester began by inducting 19 pledges and ended with 15 initiating into active membership.
  • The Chapter’s 9th DSK was finally presented to former advisor Dr. Martin Rosenberg.
  • The goal of 1500 service hours set by the chapter was met and surpassed, with a total of over 2100 service hours completed by the chapter.
  • The chapter was a recipient of the National Youth Service Grant (in the amount of $500) in order to provide supplies for the tutoring program at Church of the Covenant. Other service projects include working with City Year, the Cleveland Food Bank, and maple sugaring at the Rocky River Nature Center.
  • Our 2nd annual Formal was held, this time with a medieval theme, with many brothers and an advisor in attendance. Other highlights of the fellowship program include the ever popular game nights, decorating bags for Valentine’s Day, and family dinners.
  • We finally moved into our new office on the 5th floor of Millis.
  • By far, the largest event of the semester was hosting the 56/59 Sectional Conference in April, marking this as the second conference the chapter has hosted since its rechartering. Nearly 200 people attended, including over 60 brothers, alumni, or advisors from Theta Upsilon! Even though the weather was not particularly stellar, the numerous workshops, delicious banquet, and very exciting Price is Right fellowship event were big hits. Theta Upsilon was also named Chapter of the Year.
  • Theta Upsilon Alumnus Jeff Cicerchi was elected as the new Section 59 Chair.
 
Fall 2004

  • After experiencing significant membership dropoff due to a large number of graduates the previous semester, a 25 member pledge class, with 16 initiating reenergized the chapter.
  • Two new faculty advisors, Rob Fischer & Elaine Stevens, were welcomed to the chapter.
  • Breaks during chapter meetings featured the Brother Eat Brother Competition, with Sweet ‘n’ Sour (the pledge and alumni team) winning.
  • The annual Faculty Reception was attended by seven faculty members.
  • Informal fellowship activities were a focus during the semester, with spaghetti dinners, movie nights, and Arabica nights. Additionally, the Ghoulish Getdown was a scary success and a cookout provided a great opportunity for brothers and advisors to bond.
  • Service with the Boy Scouts of America and Girl Scouts of the United States of America was strengthened during the semester, but service to the country was the highlight of the semester when Case hosted the 2004 Vice Presidential debate, with brothers involved in a myriad of activities – including voter registration, preparations for the debate, ushering and assistance to the media to name a few.
  • The National Convention in Denver was full of celebration for the 4 actives, 1 alum, & 1 advisor in attendance. At the Convention, the Chapter won the Earle M. Herbert National Fellowship Award for the chapter with the best fellowship program; Chapter President Devang Patel chaired the Chapter Operations Reference Committee; Advisor Howard Wolf was among the first-ever recipients of the Herbert G. Horton Service to Youth Award presented by the National Scouting and Youth Services Committee, and was the presenter of the Chapter Officer Training - Treasurer's Workshop. Alumnus Jeff Cicerchi also was a presenter for the APO-LEADS program.
  • Sarah May completed over 150 hours of service, a single semester record.

  • A sendoff for Dr. Martin Rosenberg was thrown after he stepped down as an advisor. Attendance for the event included most of the chapter and several advisors. Additionally, Dr. Rosenberg was selected to receive the chapter’s 9th DSK.
  • Mu was replaced by Jay (a larger stuffed cow) as the Pledge Class Mascot.
  • The Treasurer took great strides in fundraising with a successful Valentine’s Day fundraiser and a great bake sale.
  • The Chapter sent 18 brothers, 1 pledge, 2 advisors, and 1 alum to Sectionals at Heidelberg College, where Annod was finally returned and Theta Upsilon was selected to host the 2005 Section 56/59 Conference.
  • The Chapter held its first ever formal, with a Mardi Gras theme.
  • The Alumni Event and Initiation Weekend were again held together, with brothers and alumni both enjoying a Murder Mystery Dinner.
  • The chapter was selected as the 2003-2004 CWRU Outstanding Student Organization and Liz Pund was awarded the 2003-2004 CWRU Outstanding Student Organization Member for her 4 years of service to the chapter.

  • A 14 member pledge class excited the chapter as all completed pledge contracts and initiated.
  • Brother eat Brother replaced the Family Feud to create an even distribution of brothers into 4 teams competing throughout the semester at various fellowship events.
  • The faculty reception in Guilford was divided into two open houses to host both faculty and community members at their convenience.
  • The Ghoulish Getdown Halloween party was met with great attendance and wonderful costumes.
  • Committee usage increased especially with the service committee where a designated person became the contact person for service events each week.
  • Amy Ezzo was elected to begin serving as a chapter advisor.
  • Advisors began to play a more active role in the chapter with advisors directly working with a designated officer or committee.
  • Alumni involvement as staff continued to grow, with Jeff Cicerchi becoming a national presenter of the APO LEADS program & joining the Regional Staff as Leadership Development Chair. Howard Wolf was awarded the Region V Distinguished Alumni Medal, while serving as Region V Finance Chair & Chair of the National Financial Resources Committee.
  • The chapter sent 17 brothers, 3 pledges, and several alum to the Regional Conference at the University of Toledo where Annod was stolen and not returned before the end of the conference. This resulted in ransom emails and the chapter receiving the University of Dayton’s mascot.
 
Spring 2003

  • 45 pledges (35 initiating) created great excitement as well as logistical difficulties when the chapter inducted its largest pledge class ever.
  • Brothers attended 3 different Sectional Conferences (with 1 brother attending the Section 64 Conference, 7 brothers attending the Section 62 Conference, and 20 brothers & pledges attending the Section 56/59 Conference), winning the Man-Mile and Role Call awards at the Section 56/59 Conference.
  • For the second year in a row, Theta Upsilon won the Section 59 Chapter of the Year Award.
  • The Theta Upsilon website was named Best Chapter Website in Region V and overall was the #1 rated Chapter Website in the Country.
  • Chapter alumnus, Rosanne Rohana, began serving on the Sectional Staff as Webmaster and Awards Chair.
  • After acquiring an office at the end of the previous semester, the chapter acquired its own server and an office computer.  Hanging out in the office became cool as officers began having weekly "office hours".
  • Assistant Service VP and Server Administrator became appointed officer positions.
  • Karaoke Night became an instant classic fellowship event.
  • New service projects included work at the University Settlement and helping at a weekly Girl Scouts meeting.  All told, the chapter completed over 2500 service hours.
  • The tradition of making Initiation an all-weekend event continued, with the pledge service project and Carnival alumni event on Saturday, and Initiation on Sunday afternoon.  Chapters from the entire Region were invited to join in the weekend's actvities.  A number of Section and Regional staff also attended the Initiation ceremony.
  • The "Alcohol Committee" reviewed the chapter's policy on alcohol at chapter activities.  After much research, discussion, and angst, the chapter voted overwhelmingly to remain dry.
  • The gift given to each graduating senior was a scrapbook that included pictures and written history of the previous 4 years in Theta Upsilon, as well as providing space for them to summarize their own personal experiences.
  • Chapter alumnus, Ari Wilkenfeld, was elected to begin serving as a chapter advisor.
  • This ceremony was replicated and used for the first time by the Xi Upsilon Chapter at Mount Union College.

  • Sponsored by the Chapter, Josh Boehm was elected Homecoming King.
  • The chapter inducted a pledge class of 29 and initiated 22, forming the largest pledge class yet in Theta Upsilon’s history.
  • There was an article in The Observer, as well as the Torch and Trefoil about the chapter.
  • The chapter's website was overhauled and featured the addition of online signups.
  • Office space was acquired in Morley for the Chapter.
  • Service highlights included "Cruising CWRU" in collaboration with the Orientation Week Office and the development of a relationship with the Cleveland Metroparks.
  • The chapter completed over 2000 service hours, including 2 brothers (Josh Boehm and Jon Boomershine) with 150+ hours.
  • At the National Convention in New Orleans, 10 brothers and 3 alumni celebrated as Theta Upsilon won the Dean Arno Nowotny National Service Award for the chapter with the best service program. (The chapter was also a runner-up for the National Fellowship and National Historian Awards.)

  • The Chapter surpassed 250 Initiated Brothers since the rechartering.
  • The 10th Anniversary Alumni Event was held with over 70 Alumni, Brothers, Pledges and Advisors in attendance. Attendees included 7 of the 8 DSK recipients, Presidents from 12 of 20 semesters, and countless other past officers. The attendees also represented more than 25% of all Brothers initiated during the 10 years history.
  • A new collapsible jail for Jail 'n Bail was built with the help of Pledges, Brothers, and Alumni.
  • 17 pledges, forming one of our largest groups ever, were initiated into active membership.
  • The Family Feud fellowship event made another appearance with "Whose Family is it Anyway?".
  • We set our first cumulative service hour goal, and performed over 1400 hours of service.
  • The Theta Upsilon website was named Best Website in Region V.
  • The Chapter's 8th DSK was awarded to Howard Wolf.

  • The first inter-chapter Stay-Awake is held to raise money for the Alma McLeod Foundation.
  • APO-Friends e-mail list begins in an effort to continue rush throughout the semester.
  • First initiation held at Judson Manor.
  • The Chapter’s 7th DSK was awarded to David Hanneke.

  • Tie-dyeing T-shirts made the Pledge Retreat a colorful experience.
  • The first sibling (Akhila R.) of a brother (Shruti R.) joined the chapter.
  • At the Halloween Party, the brothers got all "wrapped up" in the Mummy Contest.
  • The first brother to complete over 500 service hours since the chapter began tracking cumulative service hours was Russ Trapp.
  • 8 Brothers and 4 Alumni attended the National Convention.
  • Russ Trapp was presented the chapter's 6th DSK.
  • Performed the Rededication Ceremony.

  • Alpha Phi Omega won the CWRU Volunteer Services Award.
  • The Theta Upsilon Web Page was named the Best Web Page in Region V.
  • History Quizzes reappeared to challenge brothers' memories and knowledge.
  • Theta Upsilon participated in "75 for the 75th Anniversary" by making 75 get well cards for children at Rainbow Babies and Children Hospital.

  • The Chapter continued its increased service to the college by working with the Office of Conferences and Special Events on University fundraising, the Veale Center dedication, and Commencement.
  • The Chapter received the Ohio Chapter of the Year award for the second straight year.
  • The Chapter received the Volunteer Services Award from CWRU.

  • The Chapter substantially increased service to the college by participating in Convocation and the President's Ball. These events were a result of the relationship begun the previous year with the Office of Conferences and Special Events.
  • The Chapter helped with the Cleveland Arts Prize.
  • The Historian Committee began Road Rally.
  • Dr. Martin Rosenberg became Chair of the Advisory Committee
  • Gloria Hsieh received the Chapter's fourth DSK (Distinguished Service Key).
  • The Executive Committee was reduced from all officers to 7 (President, 3 VPs, Treasurer, Secretary, Sergeant-at-Arms).

  • CWRU President Agnar Pytte attended the Chapter's Faculty Reception.
  • The Chapter assisted with the University's Commencement for the first time. This marked the beginning of a relationship with the Office of Conferences and Special Events that served as both fundraisers for the Chapter and as a means for service to the campus.
  • The Chapter began a commitment to provide leaders and support to Boy Scout Troop 920.
  • The Chapter received its first Ohio Chapter of the Year Award.
  • Chapter Alumnus and Community Advisor Howard Wolf was named Pledge Class Namesake for the first Pledge Class of Cleveland State University's chapter (Theta Beta). Howard was also elected Section 59 Chair.
  • Matt Purdy received the Chapter's third DSK (Distinguished Service Key).

  • The Chapter served as the Big Brother Chapter in the Reactivation of the Cleveland State University (Theta Beta) Chapter.
  • Dr. Christopher Cullis (Biology Department) served as Chair of the Advisory Committee.
  • The notorious Big-Little puzzle (6 foot by 6 foot) was the highlight of the Big-Little event.
  • Gavel stealing once again became popular with the Pledge Educator losing four different gavels to the Pledge Class.
  • The Chapter acquired office space in the Office of Student Community Service (OSCS) in Yost Hall.
  • Apo-announce, apo-discuss, and apo-exec listserv email lists were created to improve internal Chapter communication. The Chapter's first website was created.
  • The Chapter sent a delegation of 2 Brothers and 1 advisor to the National Convention in Phoenix, AZ.

  • The Chapter hosted its first Alumni event, a service project at ESIM (East Side Interfaith Ministries).
  • The Chapter worked with the Girl Scouts for the first time, helping them prepare camp for the summer.
  • Brothers supported Kent State University in re-establishing their chapter (Epsilon Psi).
  • Matt Purdy was the first Brother to complete over 250 service hours since the Chapter began tracking cumulative service hours.
  • This History Ceremony was begun by Howard Wolf. Including the "Founders", this marked the eighth "class" of brothers initiated since the Chapter's re-activation.
  • The Initiation Ceremony was held in Amasa Stone Chapel.

Pledge Class Fellowship Event: Saturday night party during the Sectional Conference to raise money for the first CWRU Habitat for Humanity house. This was the first Pledge Class Fellowship Event.

  • The Chapter hosted its first Sectional Conference, the first Section 56/59 Conference as Section 57 was divided into 2 sections at the previous year's conference.
  • At Sectionals, the Chapter won the percent attendance award (3rd year in a row).
  • Donna Coglianese received the Chapter's first Brother of the Semester award, and was Sectional Conference Chair along with Paul Gerwe.
  • The Chapter appointed its first Alumni Secretary.

  • At the 1994 National Convention in Dallas/Ft. Worth TX, the chapter received an award in the National Fellowship photo contest. The Chapter sent a delegation of 4 Brothers and 1 advisor to the Convention.
  • The Advisory Committee sponsored a "welcome back BBQ".
  • The Chapter held its first Ugly Professor on campus contest.
  • A "Papa Smurf" (which was Howard Wolf's nickname) replaced "Log" as the mascot for the Brother of the Week award.

Pledge Class Service Project: Visiting and hosting a reception at Judson Manor retirement community for Judson Manor residents

  • The Chapter held its first Jail-n-Bail raising over $550 and 200 cans of food.
  • The Chapter participated in the Ticket America campaign, receiving TV news coverage for "ticketing" environmentally hazardous cars to increase awareness.
  • The Chapter won the percentage in attendance award at the Section 57 Conference with approximately 20 brothers attending. At this Conference, Ohio was split into two Sections and the Chapter was selected to host the following year's first joint Section 56/59 Conference.
  • The Membership VP position was divided for the first time into Membership VP and Pledge Educator.
  • An office was secured on the third floor of Thwing Center. Biweekly lunches were held in the office. The Chapter was able to use this office through the 1994-95 school year before the university took the room away in order to turn it into a public meeting room.
  • The Chapter was awarded the Whitney Young Award by the Greater Cleveland Council of the Boy Scouts of America for its work with urban youth through the in-school scouting program.
  • The Chapter's first brothers graduated (Howard Wolf, Mary Reiter, Geoffrey Wedig).

  • "Log," a small stuffed animal dog, was introduced as the first mascot for Brother of the Week award.
  • Gavel stealing by the Pledge Class was started with a skit required by the Pledge Class and Chapter President for its return.
  • The Chapter created several computer bulletin boards on Cleveland Freenet. The APO-General board was often among the top five CWRU Boards read on a weekly basis.

  • This pledge class was the first pledge class of the Chapter, inducting 20 rushees, of which 17 initiated.
  • The Chapter won both the percentage in attendance and man-mile awards at its first-attended Section 57 conference.
  • David Kaelber was awarded the chapter's first DSK (Distinguished Service Key).

  • Penny Verin (founding graduate student advisor from the University of California at Davis Chapter (Iota Phi)) introduced muggings.
  • Second Petitioning Group Ceremony held on September 28, 1992 for an additional 9 Interest Group Members.
  • Public Relations Coordinator and Sergeant-at-Arms positions were added as officers.
  • Rechartering Ceremony held in Guilford House on December 12, 1992 for 15 Petitioners. The chapter's first banquet followed at the Spaghetti Warehouse.
  • Theta Upsilon was the newest Chapter to be rechartered/chartered at the 1992 APO National Convention in Boston, MA. The chapter sent a delegation of one Brother and two advisors to the National Convention.

Interest Group and Petitioning Group Formed.

  • First Chapter informational meeting held in Thwing Meeting Room A on March 5, 1992 at 7:00 pm.
  • The first set of 7 officers (President, Membership VP, Service VP, Fellowship VP, Secretary, Treasurer, Historian) were chosen on March 12, 1992.
  • First Chapter Service Project held at ESIM (EastSide Interfaith Ministries) on April 11, 1992.
  • First Chapter Program Planning Conference (CPPC) held on April 12, 1992.
  • First Petitioning Group Ceremony held in Thwing's 1914 Lounge on May 5, 1992 for 11 Interest Group members. Brothers from 9 different chapters attended.
